Week 15: Quickening

"Bubbles. Butterflies. Gas. These are all words used to describe what a baby's first movements feel like to a mother.

Quickening is defined as the first time you feel your baby move. This is a long anticipated event in every pregnancy.

If you are expecting your first baby you can expect to feel your baby for the first time between 18 and 24 weeks gestation. If this is not your first baby you can expect to feel your baby a bit sooner than you felt your first. This is usually said to happen because you know what you're feeling for and your uterus is more stretched out than it was the first time around." From http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/fetaldevelopment/a/aa082999.htm

So, I wanted to write about this because I'm either having a new kind of gas/growling belly or I'm actually feeling baby :) I know, I know - it's early and probably not it, but it certainly is different! :) About 3 days ago - at the start of the weekend - I was lying in bed before getting up and felt kinda like a growling in my belly... except that it is not in my belly (much lower) and that it's not really growling. It was like a gentle growl, I guess. Since then, I have felt it every once in a while, usually when lying down.

What do you think? I don't know if anyone can really tell you yes or no, but when did you first feel what you thought was quickening? I'm sure that once the baby is REALLY kicking me, I'll be less enthusiastic. ;)

  1. Having been through two now, the first felt like the butterflies one gets when you go over the right kind of hill in the road. The second felt like someone blowing bubbles against insides--only way I know how to describe it. For the better part of the second trimester with this one I had a weird vibrating sensation toward the bottom-back of my uterus; never knew what that was but I don't think it was the baby, I think it was one of my own muscles twitching in response to a nerve being tweaked by my changing uterus.

I don't know what time within pregnancy I first felt my first son--I didn't keep a journal of such things back then. This time it happened around week 17.

I haven't moved that blog post to the wordpress blog yet, but it's here.

  2. I think I felt something when I was 11 or 12 weeks. My husband could even feel it; like a little flutter. And from all the kicking I got later, it seemed to be the same feeling. Today I had the odd experience of feeling a little knee or foot twist across my upper abdomen. Scared the heck out of me for a moment because I've never actually felt a little body part so obviously before.

  3. Wow - thanks guys for your comments! It's so neat to hear your stories about feeling the baby :)
@Helen - I didn't think about the muscle twitching, although it doesn't feel like that, but I suppose I'm feeling a bunch of stuff that is new... ;)
@Victoria - Yay - and early feel like me (I think!), lol. That would startle me too I think when the movements become more pronounced!

  6. @from marriage to motherhood - wow, I know I should enjoy this time until the little guy/girl REALLY starts to let me know they're there! :)

I will let you guys known once I feel something more... I haven't really felt anything since I posted, but that seems to be normal. I also don't really lie in bed in the morning these days, so I'll see how things are this weekend.

And I hope I'll get to see him/her at the doctor's apt next Wednesday! :)
